The building of wooden bridges has taken off in recent years, perhaps in response to increased environmental awareness.
Besides storing carbon dioxide, these bridges made of cross-laminated timber, have a lower impact on the climate thanks to lower energy consumption during production and their light weight.
Timber = less carbon footprint
They are also predominantly manufactured in the factory before being assembled on site, resulting in shorter construction times and less of a carbon footprint from road transport. In the above photo you can see Älvsbackabron in Skellefteå, Sweden, which is the longest wooden bridge in the Nordic region – a full 130 metres for walking and biking.
